Pokémen

Through a satirical take resembling Pokémon, my artwork critiques the rigid categorization of gay men based on physical attributes. Mimicking the format of Pokémon collectibles, it prompts reflection on objectification, urging viewers to consider the diversity of individuals beyond superficial classifications within the gay male community.

I had the privilege of enrolling in the "Queer Comic" class at Brown University's GNSS, where I deepened my understanding and appreciation of underground queer art.

Inspiration

More than 15 percent of gay or bisexual men had at some time suffered anorexia, bulimia or binge-eating disorder, or at least certain symptoms of those disorders.

Within The Community

But Why?

In 2013, Grindr, a common hookup app for gay men, introduced diverse "tribes" like bears and otters, creating a sort of "gay animal kingdom." While intended for self-identification, apps like this have created categories inadvertently intensified pressure to conform to specific body ideals within the gay community.

While his art has undeniably played a role in elevating visibility for the gay male community, Tom of Finland also introduces concerns of objectification and perpetuates a narrow stereotype of the ideal gay man's appearance.

Idealism for muscularity is also linked to early accounts linked to the AIDs epidemic, which was associated with weight loss and muscle wasting. Appearing muscular would demonstrate one’s health.

Outside The Community

Even Contemporary sources like VISTAS Online, ACA's platform for articles by counselors give descriptions of gay tribes, which seem outlandish and problematic, pigeonholing individuals based on traits beyond their control, indicating a wider lacking of understanding towards the gay male community community.

“Twinks express themselves in traditionally more feminine hobbies and interests. They are known to have limp wrists, higher voices, and seek friendships with females.”

Historically

Like any Pokémon, they will eventually evolve. As a example bear will eventually evolve into daddy with age

Pokémen illustrations implore a combination of the physical attributes associated with the given gay tribe, the tribe animal’s features, with a hint of Ken Sugimori's (Pokémon artist) arts style

All Pokémon have abilities. Pokémen abilities mirror their stereotypes. Bears are supposedly sexually deviant so its only right to make Bear’s ability urophilia

Chicken is the “Animal Kingdom” name for Twink, like any Pokémon Chicken belongs to a type, the Twink type, synonymous with the colors of the Twink flag

As satirical as they are, users can battle like you would with regular Pokémon cards

“They are known to have lim wrists, higher voices, and seek friendships with females”
